300 participants at the 9th Austrian Wind Energy Symposium on 20 - 21 October, 2009 in St. Pölten proved that the motto of the conference "Wind energy is going places!" is really true. It was especially nice that many new visitors from different organizations along with the "regulars" attended the symposium.
The theme of the first block was "Electro-mobility". The basis for electro-mobility is energy efficiency and energy savings and the electricity for electro-vehicles must come from renewable energy sources.
Other actual themes were covered in further blocks:
"Wind International" shared the experience of Austrian companies in China and in the USA. Especially interesting was the focus on North Africa and its renewable energy goals and potential. One speech was about the Kyoto mechanism which brings advantages to the environment and economy through the trading of CO2 certificates. Wind turbine manufacturers presented their new products. Very few people outside of the branch realize that Bachmann electronic from Feldkirch, Vorarlberg is the world market leader of controller systems for wind turbines.
The second day began with "Every day challenges - from planning a project to completion". The themes were the influence of radar systems on wind turbines, tests on wind turbines, the challenge of energy balance and Cubes®, a tool for implementing renewable energy projects.
In the discussion "Energy Politics", the speakers and participants showed optimism in view of the new eco-electricity laws and expressed their hopes that the new feed-in tariff would reach a European level. Many do not understand why Austria is at the end of the European scale.
"Wind in Forests" was the theme of the symposium which brought on strong emotions. Speakers were planners, wind farm operators and representatives from forestry. Recommendations came from environmental organizations. The Association for Protection of Forests was also given a platform to express its opinion. The organizers were more than happy to hear the summary of the representative of the German Nature Conservation Ring when he concluded "Don´t compromise!".
A warm thank you for everyone who took part or supported awes 09!
A symposium focusing on wind energy, with international speakers and exhibitors, has taken place every two years since 1992. The themes discussed about during the symposium should increase sustainability and the development of renewable energy sources in Austria and its neighbouring countries. The symposium contributes to supporting teamwork and information exchange between the different participating groups and partner countries. A special focus is on strengthening contacts to CEE countries, also in relation to entering into new export markets.
